속 Songni-san (renouncing the world mountain) was designated a National Park in March, 1970 and covers an area of 274.541km². Located in central South Korea, Songni-san is a stunning mountainscape with large craggy peaks fringed with native red pine forests, and sparkling valleys awash with gushing streams and hidden hermitages. The views in parts are breathtaking and despite its status as a national park, it remains an area surrounded by pastoral charm. Its main temple is Beopju-sa, and as the landowner, small diners (Hyugaeso) can be found in the mountains, giving it a more sociable feel. HikeKorea offers 1D hikes of the main ridge, but it can also be extended to a a multi-day hike, sleeping in a mountain cabin and temple. Hikes of this region are available as 1N/2D hikes up to 2N/3D hikes.

Itinerary: Hikers can be picked up and returned easily at the Daejeon KTX station, a one hour ride from Seoul. Then it’s another hour to Songni-san by vehicle.

Equipment: Only day packs are required for this. We sleep in an accommodation each night.

We had an unforgettable experience with Roger exploring the less discovered areas of the Songnisan National Park. The autumn scenery was stunning, and Roger did an amazing job in creating an itinerary that was just in line with what we wanted. Lots of solid hiking, impressive ridge views and authentic accommodation each night (including a non-commercial temple stay, which was beautiful). Roger is an expert on the Korean mountains and has so much experience to draw from his colourful life, which meant we felt in very safe hands throughout. He is warm, imaginative and kind – we loved our time with him and we’d absolutely love to return and explore more of Korea together.
